they don’t fucking declaw cats anymore because it’s well known to be inhumane
this isn’t an “unpopular opinion” because most people agree it shouldn’t be done (and it isn’t done anymore. vets will not agree to it). it’s like cutting off the tops of fingers. ugh idiots.

A few vets still do laser declawing, which is less cruel (but still completely shitty), but most agree only to do it when the cat has behavioral problems that would make it unadoptable with front claws.
But yeah, 99% of cats are totally fine if you just trim their fucking claws (you trim your own, don’t you?) and give them appropriate places to scratch. You can even put little caps on their claws (I call them claw-ndoms) to keep them from scratching if they’re particularly obstinate like my Sunshine.

This is not my Sunshine because she thinks the colored caps are dirt and tries to lick them off. So she wears the clear caps, which are nowhere near as photogenic. So enjoy this random Google Images cat with stylish claws.

If declawing was so rare and socially unacceptable, I wouldn’t be seeing around 30% of the cats at my local shelter with mutilated paws.

Ugh. Where do you live? I was basing my statement off of vets and the Humane Society in Indianapolis, where very few vets advertise declawing services and only a few out of dozens of shelter cats are declawed.
I’m actually surprised that it looks like Indy has its shit together on this one.

I think declawing is probably condemned by most responsible cat owners, i.e. anyone who does even an ounce of research on owning cats.
I would think that most cats in shelters are the result of not super responsible cat owners: people who don’t fix their cats, people who declaw their cats and make them crazy, people who just don’t want them anymore etc etc.
